St. Guliëlmuskerk (Saint Gulielmus Church), Maastricht
The Saint Gulielmus Church (Sint-Guliëlmuskerk) stands as a modest yet historically significant church in Maastricht’s Wittevrouwenveld neighborhood. Built in 1958, this brick hall church was designed by architect Jos Muré and served as a Roman Catholic parish church until 2015 before being repurposed in 2017 by the Lighthouse Christian Congregation.
Lacking a tower, the church presents a simple, rectangular design with a flat roof and a striking facade featuring five crosses. The slightly protruding central section of the front facade is flanked by pilasters and crowned with a rectangular bell gable bearing a cross. A natural stone relief by Dries Engelen, located above the entrance, depicts the people of Limburg presenting a church to Bishop Lemmens, who, in turn, dedicates it to Saint Gulielmus. Additional bluestone sculptures by Jean Sondeijker portray Christ and Bishop Lemmens.
Inside, the quartzite-tiled floor leads to a wide choir area, which spans the entire width of the nave and is furnished with two rows of benches. The organ, installed in 1961, remains a focal point of the space. The rear facade features two tall buttresses, while stained glass windows by Willy Gorissen incorporate yellow crosses, adding an element of color to the otherwise restrained design.
Originally built as an auxiliary church for Our Lady of Lourdes parish to serve the working-class Wittevrouwenveld community, Saint Gulielmus Church was deconsecrated in 2015 due to declining attendance. In 2017, it became the home of the Lighthouse Christian Congregation, relocating from Gronsveld to Maastricht.
Though no longer serving its original function, Saint Gulielmus Church remains an architectural and historical landmark, reflecting the evolving spiritual and social fabric of Maastricht.
