St. Joseph Convent 1890, Philipsburg
The St. Joseph Convent is one of Philipsburg’s most significant historic sites, closely linked to the development of education on Sint Maarten. While the convent was formally established in 1890, the building originally used by the Dominican Sisters predates that date and was adapted for convent use rather than newly constructed at the time. The foundation of the convent followed the wishes of Roman Catholic priest Father Stephanus J.J. Niewenhuis, who, after serving the island for 35 years, left houses, land, and financial support in his will to encourage the Dominican Sisters of the Netherlands to open a school on the island.
On 31 May 1890, six Dominican Sisters arrived from the Netherlands and took up residence in the existing structure, establishing the St. Joseph Convent and school. Under the leadership of Reverend Sister Egelie, who served as the first principal and prioress, the school opened shortly afterward to a diverse group of students, both Catholic and non-Catholic. Over time, St. Joseph School became a central institution in local life, educating generations of island residents and future community leaders.
As educational needs grew, a new convent building was completed in 1954. This structure is the one visible today along Front Street and represents a later phase in the convent’s history. Built on a larger scale, it replaced earlier facilities while continuing the convent’s role in education and community service. The building’s façade became a familiar feature of Philipsburg’s streetscape.
In 2017, Hurricane Irma caused damage to parts of the roof, though the upper floor itself was not destroyed. During repairs, the original wooden roof was replaced with a concrete one, resulting in the loss of some historical character. Today, the former convent building remains a prominent landmark on Front Street, housing retail spaces and offices. The St. Maarten Tourism Bureau, often associated with the area, is located in the neighboring historic building rather than within the convent itself.
