St. Martin Dorfkirche (Saint Martin's Village Church), Basel
Saint Martin's Church (Martinskirche) stands as one of Basel's most historically significant landmarks. Towering over Grossbasel’s old town from its location on Cathedral Hill, it holds the distinction of being the oldest parish church in Basel, with origins tracing back to the 10th or 11th century. First documented in 1101/1103, its architecture evolved over centuries, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and later styles.
Key features of the church include the late Gothic elements added in the 14th century, such as the polygonal choir and ornate facades. The tower, extended to 41 meters in 1612, remains one of Riehen’s tallest structures. In the 1520s, Saint Martin’s became central to the Reformation in Basel, with reformer Johannes Oekolampad preaching here in German for the first time in a Reformed style.
The church transitioned from a place of worship to a concert venue following a major renovation in 1851, during which a concert stage replaced the rood screen. Further adaptations in 1892 and subsequent decades solidified its role as an acoustic marvel for musical performances. Today, it is celebrated as one of Basel’s most important event venues, hosting renowned orchestras, choirs, and festivals.
The church is also notable for its mural of Saint Martin of Tours by Hans Rohner above the south portal and its historic epitaphs that adorn the interior. Despite no longer functioning as a place of worship, its bells continue to ring in significant Basel traditions, including the Autumn Fair and the morning prank of the Basel Carnival.
With a history spanning over a millennium, Saint Martin’s Church remains a symbol of Basel’s cultural and architectural heritage.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour
The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.

Basel's Historical Churches
Basel is the city of churches. Indeed, nowhere else in Switzerland will you find as many of them, both old and new, as here. Despite serious losses to the Reformation period, a good number of local temples have survived. Today, the vast majority of religious buildings, including the listed medieval Basel Minster, belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church.
