Sarasinpark (Sarasin Park), Basel
Sarasin Park, located in Riehen, canton of Basel-Stadt, is a historic 2.6-hectare park offering a blend of tranquility and rich heritage. Situated directly opposite the Fondation Beyeler, the park stands as a testament to 18th and 19th-century landscape design. Originally agricultural land, the park now provides a serene retreat with lush greenery, an orangery, a pond, and an avenue of linden trees.
The park's origins trace back to 1766 when it united the grounds of three baroque estates belonging to the Werthemann-Stahelin, Le Grand, and Elbs-Birr families. These estates featured French baroque gardens, later transformed into an English landscape park in 1812, reflecting contemporary tastes. Among the preserved elements is the Elbs-Birr estate, built as a vineyard in 1694/95, and later expanded into a baroque estate by Samuel Heusler. The estate’s courtyard and Linden Avenue remain key historical features.
In 1976, the Riehen community acquired the Elbs-Birr estate, renovating it to house the town's public music school. Ceiling paintings hidden beneath stucco were uncovered during restoration, showcasing the site’s artistic legacy. The orangery, constructed in 1836, has also been restored and now hosts upscale events.
In the 1980s, Sarasin Park was nearly repurposed for community projects like a hospital or swimming pool. Fortunately, these plans were shelved, and efforts have since focused on restoring the park to its original design. Curved pathways, visible in old plans, are being reconstructed to preserve its historic charm. Today, the park also accommodates circuses and events and carefully manages to maintain harmony with the surrounding community.
Whether you seek a peaceful escape or a glimpse into Riehen’s past, Sarasin Park is a captivating destination blending leisure and history.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour
The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.
