St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fort William

St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fort William

St. Mary's Catholic Church is the main Roman Catholic parish church serving the local community. The present building dates from the early 20th century. Construction began in 1933, and the church was blessed and opened on October 14, 1934. It replaced an older and smaller church and reflects a time when the Catholic community in the western Highlands had become more stable and established.

Designed by the Scottish architect Reginald Fairlie, the church follows a Romanesque style rather than a Gothic one. Round-headed doorways and windows, thick stone walls, and a solid overall form define the exterior. The wide, heavy tower stands out and is often compared to a castle keep instead of a traditional church spire.

Inside, the church has a clear and simple layout. A wide nave leads to the altar, with rounded arches reflecting the Romanesque style. Decoration is simple, with emphasis on stonework and natural light. Stained glass adds gentle color, and the church remains in regular use, with quiet visits welcome outside service times.
