The United Free Church of Scotland, Fort William

The United Free Church of Scotland, Fort William

The United Free Church of Scotland was founded in 1900, when the United Presbyterian Church joined with most of the Free Church of Scotland. This was part of a wider reorganisation of church life in Scotland. In 1929, most of the denomination became part of the Church of Scotland, while a smaller group chose to remain independent. That group still exists today under the same name.

This church tradition has strong roots in Highland communities and focuses on preaching and shared involvement rather than ceremony. Buildings were practical and simple, often called “churches without steeples,” with clear interiors designed so everyone could see and hear the service.

The church building opened in 1933 and follows a plain Presbyterian style, with simple walls and pitched roofs. The interior is centred on the pulpit, and a 2013 extension increased capacity from about 100 to 150 people. In the early 2010s, the congregation and building transferred to the Baptist Union of Scotland, while the structure still reflects its Presbyterian roots.
