Synagogue de la Paix, Strasbourg

Synagogue de la Paix, Strasbourg

The Synagogue of Peace (Synagogue de la Paix) stands as a significant religious and cultural landmark for the Jewish community. This building serves multiple purposes-it's a center for religious affairs, cultural activities, and communal gatherings. It plays a central role in Strasbourg as it represents the Jewish community and hosts the Chief Rabbinate of Bas-Rhin.

After 1871, Strasbourg saw an increase in German immigrants, boosting its Jewish population. A neo-Romanesque synagogue was built on quai Kléber to handle 1600 worshippers. Sadly, Nazis destroyed it on September 12, 1940, leaving a metal plaque as the sole remnant.

In the aftermath of World War II, Strasbourg's Jewish community gradually began to recover and expand. A decision was made to construct a new synagogue. The process began in 1954 under the guidance of architect Claude Meyer-Lévy. This new synagogue, known as Synagogue de la Paix or the Synagogue of Peace, was formally inaugurated on March 23, 1958.

The modern design of the new synagogue is evident, featuring a basilica-like layout constructed mainly from concrete. The exterior is adorned with intricate ironwork, prominently showcasing stars of David, including the entire front facade. The interior is home to various important elements like the Holy Ark, candelabras, and pulpit, all crafted from iron.

In later years, the synagogue underwent expansion and reorganization efforts during the 2000s. This expansion included the addition of a new Rambam Sephardi synagogue, the Grand-Rabbin-Max-Warschawski cultural center, and various associations for Jewish youth, all integrated into the historic community court.
