Tait Clock, Limerick

Tait Clock, Limerick

Tait’s Clock is a significant and historic landmark in Limerick City, erected in 1867 to honor Sir Peter Tait, a notable entrepreneur and three-time mayor of the city. Peter Tait, originally from Lerwick, Scotland, moved to Limerick in 1838 and recognized an opportunity in mechanized tailoring, leading to the establishment of the city's first ready-made clothing factory. This was made possible by the invention of the sewing machine by Singer in the USA.

The Limerick Clothing Factory, founded by Tait in the 1850s, grew into a major industrial operation, significantly contributing to the local economy by providing employment opportunities for the community. During his tenure, Tait's factory supplied military uniforms to armies in the Crimean War and the American Civil War, making it a critical player in global textile production during that era.

The clock itself is a Gothic octagonal tower featuring four faces, which not only adds to the architectural beauty of Limerick's skyline but also serves as a beacon visible from considerable distances. This Gothic structure is more than just a timepiece; it is a reminder of the era when manufacturing and industrial activities were at the heart of Limerick's economic landscape.

Located near Colbert Railway Station, Tait’s Clock Tower stands as a lasting tribute to Sir Peter Tait's legacy, commemorating his dual role as a pivotal figure in Limerick's industrial expansion and a dedicated public servant. As mayor between 1865 and 1868, Tait's contributions to the city were substantial, and the clock tower is a prominent symbol of his lasting impact on Limerick.
