The People's Museum of Limerick, Limerick

The People's Museum of Limerick is a local history museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural and historical heritage of Limerick city and county. Opened on October 7, 2019, by Senator David Norris, the museum is situated in a notable Georgian building constructed in 1838, originally part of the Pery Square Tontine Company and designed by architect James Pain.

The museum's conception was inspired by successful models such as the Little Museum of Dublin and the Waterford Experience. Its inaugural event for Heritage Week 2019 featured a lecture by Dr. Karol Mullaney-Dignam from the University of Limerick, who provided insights into the musical culture of Irish landed society during the late Georgian and early Victorian periods, enhancing the opening with a performance of the song "Robin Adair."

The museum boasts an extensive collection that includes items significant to the historical and cultural narrative of Limerick. It encompasses aspects of military history and the famed Limerick lace, alongside profiling notable figures such as Richard Bourke, Catherine Hayes, Frank McCourt, and Sean Wall. In August 2020, the museum expanded its display repertoire with an exhibit dedicated to local taxidermy.

A significant addition to the museum's collections is the "Carroll Collection," donated by June O'Carroll Robinson. This collection includes family heirlooms and military memorabilia dating from the 1700s to the 1920s, with notable items like a coat belonging to Joseph Bonaparte, captured at the Battle of Vitoria, reflecting the experiences of William Parker Carrol, a participant in the Napoleonic Wars.

As part of the Museum of Childhood Ireland network, the museum also features a room specifically devoted to toys and childhood in Limerick, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past experiences of its younger inhabitants.

The museum also engages the community with cultural events, including a monthly literary gathering named "On the Nail," and has added a modern twist with the opening of a local chocolatier, Braw, in June 2021, further integrating local artisan culture into its offerings. This blend of historical depth with cultural engagement makes The People's Museum of Limerick a cornerstone for both residents and visitors interested in the rich heritage of Limerick.
