Teatro Apollo (Apollo Theater), Lecce

The Apollo Theater is a notable example of early 20th-century neoclassical architecture and one of the city’s key cultural landmarks. Designed by engineer Tassoni and built by Maestro Vincenzo Cappello, it first opened its doors on May 15, 1912.

The theater’s grand façade features a row of columns leading to elegant wooden ticket booths, quickly becoming a focal point in Lecce’s vibrant arts scene.
During the renovation, which uncovered Neolithic artifacts, a portion of the theater was transformed into a museum area, highlighting the site’s archaeological as well as cultural significance.

The Apollo Theater reopened in 2017 with a formal ceremony attended by Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella.

Today, the theater boasts beautifully restored interiors with Hellenistic-style decorations, including Murano glass lampshades and wooden columns, alongside modern upgrades to enhance acoustics.

It remains a premier venue for opera, classical concerts, and theatrical performances, continuing its long-standing tradition as a cultural hub in Lecce.

Lecce's Baroque Churches Walking Tour

Lecce isn’t shy about its reputation-it’s often called the “Capital of Baroque,” and one stroll through the old town makes it clear why.
