Teatro Bolivar, Quito

Teatro Bolivar, Quito

Teatro Bolivar is one of the most emblematic theaters in the country. Its construction was commissioned by the Mantilla brothers, who hired the famous Hoffman & Henon architecture firm from Philadelphia to design the building. The theater, inaugurated in 1933, was designed in the art-nuvó style and is considered the greatest exponent of this type of architecture in Ecuador.

For many years, the Bolívar Theater was one of the most important cultural centers in the city, hosting a wide variety of musical and theatrical events. However, in the 1980s, with the advent of mass media, the theater began to lose popularity, and from 1988 to 1997, it was leased to a commercial film distribution company.

To restore the theater, the Teatro Bolívar Foundation was created in 2002, which obtained funds from national and international organizations and private companies. Thanks to their efforts, 85% of the building has been restored and reconstructed.

Today, the Teatro Bolivar is fully operational and offers a range of facilities, including a room with 963 seats, a restaurant specializing in republican gastronomy, a cafeteria, an artistic-musical events and cultural center, a space for teaching various artistic disciplines, and a museum that tells the story of the theater's 83-year history.
