Teatro Mancinelli (Mancinelli Theatre), Orvieto

The Mancinelli Theatre is a key artistic and historical landmark in Orvieto. The theater features a classic Italian design with a horseshoe-shaped hall, four levels of private boxes, and a gallery. It has a seating capacity of approximately 600 people. Designed by the renowned Roman architect Virginio Vespignani, this neoclassical architectural gem was completed in 1863, with its first theatre season kicking off on May 1, 1866.

As you step into the lobby, you'll be greeted by the three Muses-Thalia, Melpomene, and Euterpe-who serve as the inspirers and protectors of the arts, inviting you to enjoy a timeless performance. The theatre's inaugural opera, Gaetano Donizetti’s La Favorita, premiered on May 19, 1866.

Once inside the stalls, a glance upwards reveals a ceiling adorned with vibrant colors, intricate shapes, and harmonious figures encircling the elegant “Dance of the Hours” at its center. These decorations were crafted by Annibale Angelini of Perugia and the young Roman artist Cesare Fracassini. Fracassini also painted the Historical Curtain, depicting the expulsion of the Goths from Orvieto by General Belisarius in 535 AD, completing this masterpiece in just 40 days.

Two grand staircases, positioned on opposite sides, lead to the four tiers of stages. Along the way, you can admire busts of Vespignani and Fracassini on one side, and on the other, the busts of brothers Luigi and Marino Mancinelli-Orvieto’s renowned conductors and composers, to whom the theatre was dedicated in 1922.

The building reaches its pinnacle of elegance on the third floor, known as the piano nobile, with three fully frescoed halls: the central foyer, flanked by the blue and yellow halls, named for their distinctive wall colors. Originally, these rooms served as dining and entertainment spaces for aristocratic families but now host conferences, concerts, special performances, and weddings.
