This compact commercial corridor lies beside Brown University and within walking distance of the Rhode Island School of Design. Its sidewalks are busiest during the academic year, when students, residents, and visitors move between cafés, casual restaurants, small shops, and campus buildings. Close-set storefronts, outdoor tables, bicycle traffic, and a steady flow of pedestrians give the area the character of a university gathering place rather than a formal sightseeing district.

The route was designated Cross Street in 1799 and received its present name in 1823, reflecting the gradual development of College Hill beyond the university’s original grounds. Older houses and narrow commercial buildings remain mixed with newer construction, so the streetscape changes from block to block. This layered appearance shows how a residential neighborhood adapted to serve a growing student population while retaining parts of its nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scale.

Food is a major part of the experience. Menus cover Middle Eastern, East Asian, South Asian, Mediterranean, American, and dessert-focused options, with many counters designed for quick meals. Independent retailers, service businesses, and national brands occupy nearby storefronts, and the selection changes regularly. One enduring landmark is the Avon Cinema, an Art Deco movie house operating since 1938.

Visitors can explore the main commercial section on foot in less than an hour, though a meal, shopping, or a film can extend the visit. The area is especially active in the afternoon and evening, while mornings tend to be quieter. Parking is limited, and walking, cycling, or public transport may be more convenient. Side routes lead to university greens, historic buildings, galleries, and residential streets.
