The Impossible Triangle, Perth

The Impossible Triangle, Perth

The Impossible Triangle in Perth is a captivating sculpture that showcases the intriguing concept of the "Penrose Triangle," a geometric illusion of an impossible object. This artwork was the brainchild of local artist Brian McKay and architect Ahmad Abas, drawing inspiration from the pioneering work of British geneticist Lionel Penrose and his son Sir Roger Penrose, a Professor of Mathematics in the 1950s. Their collaborative effort brought to life an art installation that challenges viewers' perceptions, offering the illusion of a triangle from specific vantage points along a privileged axis at only two locations.

Situated in East Perth, the sculpture was a significant component of the East Perth Redevelopment Project, an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming 38 hectares of industrial land into a vibrant, liveable suburb adjacent to the Perth CBD. This project marked the largest urban renewal endeavor in Western Australia at the time. Standing at an impressive height of 13.5 metres, the Impossible Triangle is not only a landmark but also a symbol of innovation and creativity in urban art.

One of the most striking features of the sculpture is its polished steel striations, which reflect both artificial light and sunlight. This interaction with light creates a dynamic visual effect that changes dramatically between sunrise and sunset, a distinctive attribute that was achieved for the first time in this project. The Impossible Triangle thus stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, and architecture, inviting onlookers to explore the boundaries between perception and reality.
