Thomas Francis Meagher Statue, Waterford
The Thomas Francis Meagher Statue, prominently situated on The Mall, commemorates the life and legacy of one of Waterford's and Ireland's notable nationalist leaders. Born into privilege in 1823, Meagher passionately advocated for Irish Independence from British rule. He is best known for designing the green, white, and gold tricolour flag, which eventually became Ireland's national flag. Meagher's activism led to his arrest and subsequent exile to Tasmania, where he later escaped to America.
In the United States, he rose to prominence as a journalist and lawyer before playing a significant role in the American Civil War, commanding the renowned "Irish Brigade." Following the war, Meagher served as Secretary and Acting Territorial Governor of Montana until his mysterious death in 1867.

Waterford Introduction Walking Tour
Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland, whose stones still resonate with the echoes of its vibrant past. Historically the site of a Viking settlement, it emerged in 914 AD. The name “Waterford” derives from the Old Norse “Vedrarfjord,” meaning "ram-" or "windy fjord," which speaks to the city's strategic coastal location and tempestuous history.
