Viking Sword and Longboat, Waterford

Viking Sword and Longboat, Waterford

Just outside Reginald’s Tower stands the impressive Vadrafjordr, a 40ft Viking Long Boat with a striking red sail. Crafted by a diverse group of local artisans, including a cabinet maker, carpenter, plumber, and others, this longboat is a testament to traditional craftsmanship. Built with Irish oak sourced from Carlow and sailcloth woven with polyester, it pays homage to Viking ships found in Denmark, particularly the Skuldelev 2 ship, originating from Dublin around 1042-1043 AD. The project, supported by an Irish State agency, not only preserves historical heritage but also nurtures traditional skills among participants.

Similarly, Bailey’s New Street boasts another remarkable artifact, the world's longest wooden sword sculpture, measuring over 15 meters. Carved from a single tree, it intricately depicts Waterford's rich history, adding to the city's unique cultural landscape. These artifacts, both the sword and longboat, symbolize Waterford's enduring connection to its Viking past, inviting visitors to delve into its fascinating history firsthand.

Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland, whose stones still resonate with the echoes of its vibrant past. Historically the site of a Viking settlement, it emerged in 914 AD. The name “Waterford” derives from the Old Norse “Vedrarfjord,” meaning "ram-" or "windy fjord," which speaks to the city's strategic coastal location and tempestuous history.
