St. Nicholas Church, Ohrid

St. Nicholas Church, Ohrid

"Sveti Nikola" (in Macedonian literary norm: "Sveti Nikola") is an Orthodox church in the city of Ohrid. The church is the main church of the Ninth Ohrid Parish, part of the Ohrid Bishopric of the Debar-Kicevo Eparchy of the Macedonian Orthodox Church - Ohrid Archdiocese.

The church was built by the Vlachs who settled in Ohrid, after the destruction of Moskopole by Ali Pasha Yaninski, during the reign of Geladin Bey (1800 - 1830). It was built in 1863 during the reign of Metropolitan Meletii of Prespa and Ohrid.

The church is single-nave, vaulted with two blind domes. It is built of stone, and the corners, roof cornices and the five-sided apse to the east are made of limestone. Later, a school building was built on the west side of the church, which was later used by the priests. In 2006 - 2009, a porch and bell tower were added.

The murals are from the end of the 20th century, the work of Dragan Risteski from Ohrid. The doors of the iconostasis and the crucifix were probably brought from the burnt church in Moskopole.

The iconostasis – six impressive capital and festive icons, was painted by Dicho Zograf in 1863. From this year there is also the icon of St. Cyril, St. Clement and St. Methodius - the core of the composition of the Septuagint.
