Torre del Reformador (Reformer Tower), Guatemala City

Torre del Reformador (Reformer Tower), Guatemala City

The Reformer Tower was built in 1935 to honor the centenary of President Justo Rufino Barrios, rising about 72 meters above the city and resembling Paris’s famous Eiffel Tower.

Erected using galvanized iron manufactured in the United States and assembled locally by engineer-mayor Arturo Bickford, the tower originally featured a Belgian-donated bell at its peak. That bell was later replaced by an aircraft beacon-donated by American Airlines in the 1980s-to aid aerial navigation. The structure is beautifully lit at night, and its landscaped base makes for a scenic spot to pause during your city exploration.

Though you can't climb to the top, the tower offers a unique experience-especially as traffic flows underneath it, creating a dynamic urban photo opportunity reminiscent of driving through a monument. It also serves as a place for community activities and local vendors, meaning you’ll often find artisans and snack sellers adding life to the plaza.
