Tour Duchesne (Duchesne Tower), Rennes

Tour Duchesne (Duchesne Tower), Rennes

Duchesne Tower is an impressive medieval tower that reflects Rennes’ historic defense system. Constructed between 1447 and 1459 during the expansion of the city’s second ring of walls, it remains one of the rare surviving elements of Brittany’s former fortifications. The tower is named after Jehan du Chesne, the esteemed "head gatekeeper" of Rennes, who was responsible for opening and closing the city gates and is recorded as its first resident.

Local lore offers another charming detail: the tradition of installing a faux bird target atop the tower, used in archery contests to crown the “king of the papegaut” until the late 17th century. Today, Duchesne Tower sits within the green expanse of Square Hyacinthe‑Lorette, forming a picturesque setting that blends well-preserved architecture with subtle gardens and remnants of Gallo-Roman defensive walls nearby.

Guided plaques help trace the timelines-from early Roman defenses, dating to as early as the 3rd century, through to the Gothic expansions of the 15th century. Designated a Historic Monument in March 1944, Tour Duchesne remains under the guardianship of Rennes Metropolis since its acquisition in 2023.
