Tour Saint-Nicolas (Saint Nicolas Tower), La Rochelle

The Saint Nicolas Tower is one of the three iconic medieval towers that guard the entrance to the old port of La Rochelle, alongside the Chain Tower and the Lantern Tower. Completed in 1376 and officially classified as a Monument historique in 1879, it was named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Together with the Chain Tower, it once served as a powerful defensive barrier, using an enormous chain stretched across the harbor to prevent unauthorized ships from entering.

This 38-meter-high structure is a marvel of medieval engineering and design. Built on unstable marshy ground, it rests on oak stakes driven deep into the mud and secured with stones. Despite these precautions, the tower began to lean northeast during construction. Ingeniously, the builders reinforced it and corrected the tilt from the second floor upward-a subtle slant that is still visible today and adds a unique character to the tower’s silhouette.

Beyond its defensive role, the Saint Nicolas Tower also functioned as a prison throughout much of its history. Its thick stone walls and fortified chambers made it ideal for housing captives during periods of war and unrest. Today, visitors can explore its labyrinthine stairways and vaulted rooms, discovering traces of its past as both a guardian of the port and a place of confinement.

According to local legend, the tower has a mythical origin: it was built by the fairy Mélusine, who accidentally dropped the stones from her apron while flying over La Rochelle.
