The Fiji Times, Suva

The Fiji Times, Suva

Fiji’s first newspaper, The Fiji Times was founded in Levuka in 1869 by Welshman George Littleton Griffiths. The first office was at Albion Passage on Beach Street. Griffiths was a pioneer who was born into a family of architects, builders and timber owners. In 1881, Griffiths started a separate paper in the new capital: The Suva Times. At the end of 1886, he decided to bring The Fiji Times to Suva. The building features the false-front style of the times. Though renovated through the years, its basic symmetric form style, with extended vertical parapet, horizontal verandah and columns, has been retained.
