Tribunal de Grande Instance (High Court), Bordeaux

The proud winner of a legal competition stands in Bordeaux's historic district, next to Saint Andre Cathedral and the Town Hall. The Tribunal de Grande Instance represents the Law Courts' functions with its distinct components.

The modern Tribunal de Grande Instance, designed by architect Sir Richard Rogers, is housed in a unique glass, chrome, and wood building. It incorporates both historical and contemporary elements, with two preserved towers from 1935 and 1969, and a newer, taller square tower added later. Sir Richard's design aims to symbolize transparent justice for the future, echoing the idea that justice should be visible, not just enacted. His "vast glass enclosure" architectural concept, resembling the British saying "Justice must not only be done, but also must be seen to be done," poses a question for the 21st century.

Without bold claims, the building offers a modern take on a classical archetype. Graceful columns, rhythmic openings, and an abstracted sanctuary-like feel. The front lacks a traditional portico but connects openly with the gothic cathedral and cityscape, facing the public street.

The entrance is subtly designed with discreetly positioned stairs. Seven courtrooms are elevated on pilotis above the base, providing transparent views to internal and external observers. The central atrium offers an unobstructed view, separating courtrooms from the rear administrative wing. Clear layout allows easy paths for both visitors and magistrates.
