United States Post Office Central, Fort Worth

The United States Post Office Central in Fort Worth is a notable historic building designed by architect Wyatt C. Hedrick and completed in 1933. Constructed from Cordova limestone, it represents a mix of Beaux Arts and Classical architectural styles. The building's classical columns feature distinctive capitals adorned with carvings of Texas Longhorn and Hereford cattle, while the cornice is decorated with sculpted lion heads, offering a clear tribute to regional heritage.

Inside, visitors can experience the impressive lobby that spans the full length of the structure. This space features patterned stone floors, marble walls, and expansive bronze grilles. The ceiling is intricately detailed with ornate plaster and gold leaf designs.

Additionally, the Post Office houses murals created in 1934 by Fort Worth artists Dwight Clay Holmes and William Henry Baker under the Public Works of Art Project. The lobby also bears witness to decades of daily use, evident in the worn depressions on the stone floor near the mail slots.
