Uptown Gallery, Richmond

Uptown Gallery in Richmond is a pioneering artist co-op gallery that opened its doors in September 1992. It was established to support the local arts community by providing a space for artists to exhibit their work and develop their skills within a communal setting. This gallery not only offers artists a platform to display their creations but also fosters an environment for learning and collaboration among its members.

Located in the "Uptown" neighborhood adjacent to Virginia Commonwealth University's Monroe Campus, the gallery is notable for its architectural beauty, featuring high ceilings, a grand staircase, and striking etched glass windows. The interior is arranged in the style of a nineteenth-century French salon, which is unique in Richmond and provides multiple spaces for displaying art.

As a cooperative, Uptown Gallery is entirely managed by the artists themselves. Artists must undergo a review process to have their work accepted for exhibition, ensuring a high standard of quality and diversity. The gallery has become a cornerstone of what is now known as the Main Art Corridor, which has attracted additional galleries and transformed Main Street into a vibrant arts district.

Every first Friday of the month, Main Street comes alive with artisans and art enthusiasts for a lively cultural event that showcases new exhibits. At Uptown Gallery, monthly exhibitions, featured artists, and guest artists provide a dynamic and engaging experience.
