Villa Croce Contemporary Art Museum, Genoa
The Villa Croce Contemporary Art Museum sits within a beautifully restored 19th-century neoclassical villa that overlooks the sea and its surrounding park. In 1951, the Croce family generously donated the estate to the city of Genoa, with the intention of converting it into a cultural institution. Following renovations, the museum officially opened to the public in 1985, establishing itself as the second major contemporary art venue in Italy at the time.
Today, Villa Croce houses a permanent collection of over 3,000 works spanning Italian and international modern and contemporary art. Highlights include pieces by seminal abstract artists like Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Bruno Munari, Ben Vautier, and Osvaldo Licini, as well as a strong focus on Ligurian creativity post–World War II. The nucleus of the collection stems from Maria Cernuschi Ghiringhelli’s abstract art holdings, which form the museum’s foundational core.
Villa Croce offers an immersive visitor experience: the ground floor features a library, bookstore, and conference room enriched with original 19th-century decoration. The first floor hosts rotating temporary exhibitions, while the second floor showcases the permanent collection. Beyond visual displays, it also serves as a lively cultural hub, regularly presenting events that blend art with music, cinema, literature, and performance.
