Wharton Park, Durham

Wharton Park, Durham

Wharton Park, located just north of Durham’s city centre, is one of the city’s oldest and most cherished public spaces. Established in 1857 by William Lloyd Wharton-then Sheriff of Durham and chairman of the North Eastern Railway-the park was envisioned as a gift to the people, combining recreation, education, and panoramic views across the city. Its hillside position near the railway station allowed for both scenic strolls and the chance to watch passing trains from a mock fortress known as the Battery.

Over the decades, Wharton Park evolved into a lively community venue. It famously hosted the first-ever Durham Miners’ Gala in 1871 and became a place for sports, performances, and family gatherings. Additions by the City Council included the caretaker’s house, statues of Neptune and Prince Albert (“Albert the Good”), and expansions to the park’s original boundaries. The park’s layout, with its open green spaces and varied terrain, reflects both its 19th-century roots and its modern role as a dynamic civic hub.

Today, Wharton Park remains a welcoming destination for locals and tourists alike. It features a heritage centre, café, outdoor gym, golf field, toddler play area, multi-use games court, and a miniature car track. The community garden and walking paths offer quieter escapes, while the amphitheatre continues to host events and performances. Designated as a VisitEngland-accredited attraction, the park also offers exceptional views of Durham Cathedral and Castle-two UNESCO-listed landmarks visible from its elevated grounds.

Combining historical significance with updated amenities, Wharton Park is a vibrant green space where generations of Durham residents have gathered to relax, learn, and celebrate.

According to the legend, it all started with a missing cow. Back in 995, a group of monks fleeing Viking raiders were hauling around the remains of Saint Cuthbert when their saintly cargo decided to stop moving. No matter how hard they tried, the bier wouldn’t budge-until a milkmaid chasing her lost dun cow wandered past. ("Dun" is a dull shade of brownish grey. ) The monks took the...  view more
