William T. Young Library, Lexington

William T. Young Library, Lexington

Welcome to the William T. Young Library-affectionately known as “Willy T.”-the central hub of learning and culture at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Opened in April 1998 and designed by Kallmann McKinnell & Wood alongside Nolan & Nolan, this landmark building is the university’s third central library, replacing the Margaret I. King Library. With its striking octagonal shape, two‑story brick arcades, expansive glass walls, and skylit rotunda crowned by a radiant chandelier, it’s a standout both architecturally and as a hub of activity on campus.

Named after Lexington native William T. Young-a successful alumnus, prominent businessman, and thoroughbred breeder-“Willy T.” was made possible by Young’s pivotal $5 million donation and subsequent fundraising that ultimately brought the total construction cost to $58 million. Young’s legacy lives on not only in the building’s name, but also in the library’s impressive book endowment-reportedly among the largest of any public university in the United States.

Inside, visitors will find six floors housing over 1.2 million volumes, along with seating for over 4,000 patrons and cutting‑edge technology. Originally outfitted with hundreds of desktops and wireless laptop support, the library continues to offer modern IT services, and its compact shelving system is designed to maximize space for study areas and group collaboration. The basement hosts the vibrant Hub @ WTs, offering open study spaces, more than 200 Windows and Mac computers, tech assistance, the laid‑back Grub Hub snack area, and a Starbucks on the east wing.

For tourists exploring Lexington, Willy T. offers more than books-it’s an architectural gem and public federal depository that welcomes learners of all ages. Whether you're drawn by its luminous atrium, the tapestry of Storm Cat by the circulation desk, or simply looking for a quiet place to read or study, this iconic library is well worth a visit. Open to the wider community, it delivers a compelling glimpse into the intellectual heart of the University of Kentucky.
