Zona Arqueologica Playa del Carmen (Playa del Carmen Archeological Site), Playa del Carmen
The Playa del Carmen Archeological Site stands as one of the earliest encounters between Spanish conquistadors and the Mayan civilization in 1518. Referred to as "water from the north" in Mayan, this site bears witness to a rich historical tapestry dating from 1200 to 1500 AD. Characterized by eight groups of modest structures nestled amidst the coastal landscape and lush jungle, it offers a glimpse into Mayan life during the Late Postclassic period.
Comprising 19 groups of civic-religious buildings, the site's most notable structures are found within groups B, C, and D, with Structure C-1 emerging as the largest and most well-preserved. This structure harbors remnants of mural paintings, including one of the last Mayan calendrical dates ever recorded. Another feature is the U-shaped wall enclosing the main structures within Group C.
Reflecting the architectural prowess of the Mayan civilization, these structures primarily served ritualistic purposes, alongside masonry residences and platforms for perishable material houses. As remnants of a bygone era, the Playa del Carmen Archeological Site offers invaluable insights into the cultural and historical legacy of the region during the Late Postclassic period.
