Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen, Playa del Carmen

The Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen is a historical and cultural landmark dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Carmen, the patroness of Playa del Carmen.

The region’s small population began to grow in the early 20th century with the development of the timber trade and the extraction of chicle. Despite this growth, the community had no permanent church until the chapel was built in the 1960s. The chapel is easy to recognize by its white façade, arched entrance, and simple design. Local materials, including stone from nearby Maya structures, beach sand, and seawater, were used in its construction.

Inside, the chapel has a simple single-nave layout, with white plastered walls, exposed dark wooden ceiling beams, and rows of polished wooden pews arranged along a central tiled aisle. The main highlights are concentrated around the sanctuary at the far end of the nave. Here, a simple altar stands beneath a large crucifix, forming the visual focus of the interior. Behind and around the altar, a broad glass window walls bring in natural light and provide direct views toward the beach and the Caribbean Sea.

Along the side walls of the nave, visitors can see small religious images and lantern-style lights. Outside, beside the entrance and near the base of the bell tower, stands a distinctive stone statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This chapel remains an active place of worship and is a highly popular venue for destination weddings, valued especially for its intimate interior and picturesque seaside backdrop.
