Newcastle has to be one of the most underrated cities in England. It has a very well connected public transport system, a rich medieval core, a lovely quayside along River Tyne as well as a very vibrant nightlife. Though perhaps it is disadvantaged by its far northeastern location. But in case you are there for a business trip, as a student in the university, as an away (or home!) supporter of Newcastle United, or along the way up to Edinburgh, it is definitely worth staying a couple of days. The history of Newcastle (full name Newcastle upon Tyne) began from over 2,000 years ago during the Roman Empire, as part of Hadrian’s Wall that marked the northern boundary of Roman Britain. Since then, a settlement in the area grew, until the Normans built a castle that gave Newcastle its name. Trade and population then grew significantly, and especially during the Industrial Revolution, Newcastle became a key trading hub in England.
