3-Day Trapani Itinerary: The Highlights of West Sicily, Trapani, Italy

Even though Trapani is not one of the largest cities in Sicily, it is still a significant port town in west Sicily with a scenic historic centre. The region around Trapani is also well-known for its salt pans and its production of salt, its gateway to the Egadi Islands (Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo), its medieval hilltop town of Erice and the ancient Greek archaeological site of Segesta. What you get then, is a great mix of history, nature and amazing views, all nicely packed in this 3-day Trapani itinerary!

The history of Trapani began with the name of ‘Drepana’ (meaning ‘sickle’ in Greek) due to the sickle-shaped natural harbour of Trapani. In fact, Drepana used to function as the port and harbour for the nearby medieval hilltop city of Erice.

Then, over the years under the Roman, Arabic, Norman and Spanish rules, Trapani continued to evolve and flourish as a port, also boosting its trade in salt and tuna.
