Commissioned by King Anawrahta (the founder of the Bagan Empire) and finished by King Kyansittha in 1102, this iconic pagoda served as the prototype from which point almost all subsequent Burmese stupas followed.

On the eastern side of the platform, there is a small water-filled hole in the stone. If you look into it, you can see the reflection of the golden spire without having to crane your neck upward-a trick designed for ancient royalty to view the top comfortably!

This is an archaeological mound containing the remains of some of the earliest brick structures in Bagan, predating the massive golden age of the 11th century.
