500X Gallery, Dallas

500X Gallery, Dallas

500X Gallery, established in 1978, has been a cornerstone for emerging artists in Dallas, offering one of the city's premier exhibition spaces. Initially located in a historic tire factory and air-conditioning warehouse from 1916, the gallery boasted over 3,000 square feet of exhibition space until 2020. In the summer of that year, it relocated to Fabrication Street in West Dallas, continuing its legacy in a new setting.

500X Gallery, founded by artists Will Hipps and Richard Childers, aimed to establish an independent venue for artists free from external constraints. Over four decades, it has served as a vital platform for artists to exhibit directly to the public, launching many into the broader art world. Notable alumni include Vincent Falsetta, Otis Jones, Nic Nicosia, Frances Bagley, Tom Orr, Frank X. Tolbert, Randall Garrett, and Paul Booker.

500X Gallery continues to support the artistic community by showcasing works from its current members and guest artists, with new exhibitions featured monthly. This approach has enabled 500X to introduce a diverse range of artists from Texas, as well as national and international talents, to the Dallas/Fort Worth art scene.

The gallery hosts an annual "Expo" show featuring a diverse selection of works chosen by a respected figure in the local arts scene. Additionally, they offer an "Open Call" exhibit for all artists, emphasizing accessibility. In 2020, 500X introduced juried shows specifically for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC artists, aiming to amplify marginalized voices in the DFW arts community.
