Abbey of Saints Severus and Martirio, Orvieto

Abbey of Saints Severus and Martirio, Orvieto

The Abbey of Saints Severo and Martirio, also known as La Badia, is located near Orvieto. The origins of the complex trace back to the 6th century, when the Lombard noblewoman Rotruda established the Abbey near a small church dedicated to San Silvestro. According to tradition, after the death of Saint Severo, Rotruda reached out to touch his coffin, and her hand became trapped until she vowed to build a sanctuary dedicated to the saint at that spot. Consequently, the complex was built and dedicated to Severo and his disciple, San Martirio.

The Abbey of Saints Severo and Martirio features significant elements including the original 12th-century church, the Oratory of the Crucifix, and a distinctive dodecagonal bell tower, now symbolic of the complex. The church retains a Cosmatesque floor, a stone altar with a Roman-era bas-relief, and an upper choir and lower vestibule. A unique apse at the rear allows the Abbot discreet observation, similar to other churches in Orvieto and Morrano.

The Oratory near the entrance showcases 13th-century frescoes, including a Crucifix with various saints, originally serving as a refectory. The bell tower, integrated with the 12th-century complex, has mullioned windows, single-lancet additions, and a crenellated frame, with the bell "Viola" known for its melodious sound.

Currently, the Abbey is privately owned and operates as a luxury accommodation, with parts open for public visitation, including the tower and sections of the medieval complex.
