Academisch Historisch Museum (Academic Historical Museum), Leiden
The Academic Historical Museum (AHM) in Leiden invites visitors to explore the rich history of Leiden University, one of Europe’s oldest institutions, established in 1575. Housed in the historic Academy Building, the museum brings to life the story of the university and its student culture through portraits, murals, and historical objects. The Academy Building itself dates back to 1581 when Leiden University moved into what was once the church of Dominican nuns.
The museum offers a unique journey through the university's past, including its ties to figures like Desiderius Erasmus, whose portrait marked the beginning of the university's renowned portrait collection in 1597. The collection also features the "Fabulous Four" Nobel Prize winners: physicists Hendrik Lorentz (1902) and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1913), Albert Einstein (1920), and Willem Einthoven, a pioneer in medicine (1924). Sculptures of notable professors and murals, such as Uri Ruff's 2009 depiction of modern student life, complement the permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Notable locations within the Academy Building include the Vault Room, adorned with the university motto Praesidium libertatis ("bastion of freedom"), and the Great Auditorium, which has hosted theology lectures since 1581. Visitors can also see charcoal drawings by Victor de Stuers, dating back to 1865, and the Sweat Room, a beloved part of Leiden’s graduation tradition.
While some parts of the Academy Building are restricted, visitors attending university events like inaugural lectures or PhD ceremonies can experience its historic interiors. A museum ribbon leads guests through key exhibits, ensuring an engaging and cohesive journey.
Opened in 1931, the museum has been shaped by notable curators like Octavie Idenburg-Siegenbeek van Heukelom, Rudi Ekkart, and Willem Otterspeer. Since 2017, the museum has been part of Leiden University Libraries, further solidifying its role as a guardian of academic history. The museum is accessible during office hours, with additional archival materials available by appointment.
