Veth Building, Leiden

Veth Building, Leiden

The Veth Building, located in Leiden, is a fascinating blend of historical and modern architecture, serving as a hub for education and research. Built in the early 19th century, this red-brick structure initially housed a botanic laboratory and herbarium, with construction carried out in phases between 1904 and 1914. The building was designed by architect Jacob van Lokhorst in a neo-Gothic style, featuring pointed windows with intricate tracery. It was later modified to incorporate elements of Tudor and Baroque designs, creating a unique visual identity with large, modern windows on the ground floor and white-painted Baroque windows above.

In 2006, the building was named after Pieter Johannes Veth, an accomplished scholar and alumnus of Leiden University, known for his expertise in theology, Hebrew, and Arabic. The structure has since evolved into an educational space, accommodating the Faculty of Humanities as part of Leiden University’s Humanities Campus project. The transformation was completed in 2017, modernizing the interior while maintaining its architectural heritage.

Today, the Veth Building hosts departments such as Philosophy, Creative and Performing Arts, Digital Humanities, and IT and Facilities. With its strategic location near the Hortus Botanicus and seamless integration into the Witte Singel Doelen Complex, the building features a striking floating concrete staircase leading to its main entrance, symbolizing its harmonious mix of old and new.
