AEGON Center, Louisville
Standing tall in downtown Louisville, the AEGON Center-now more commonly referred to by its address, 400 West Market-is the tallest building in the state. Completed in 1993 for $100 million, the 35-story skyscraper reaches 549 feet (167 meters) into the skyline. It was designed by renowned architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson, who gave it a distinctive Romanesque dome rising 80 feet, internally illuminated to dramatic effect at night. Originally named the Capital Holding Center, the building has gone through several name changes, reflecting shifts in its corporate tenants.
In terms of structure, the AEGON Center stands out for its use of reinforced concrete rather than the more typical steel frame for high-rise buildings of its scale. Inside, it offers over 633,000 square feet of office space and nearly 19,000 square feet dedicated to retail. A seasonal lighting display transforms the building each year, with the upper floors glowing in red and green from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. The building’s nighttime presence and eye-catching dome have become defining elements of Louisville’s urban landscape.
Enhancing its civic presence, the plaza in front of the tower features a statue of Alysheba, the 1987 Kentucky Derby winner and 1993 U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee-a nod to the city’s horse racing heritage. The original ownership of the property involved Hines Interests and Japanese partners, but in 2004, it was acquired by an investment group led by David Werner. Today, 400 West Market remains both a commercial hub and a recognizable symbol of modern Louisville.
