Aerospace Pavilion, Moscow

The Aerospace Pavilion, officially Pavilion No. 34 “Cosmos,” is an exhibition building associated with Soviet engineering and space exploration. Built in 1938-1939 as the Mechanization pavilion, it was designed by Viktor Andreyev, Ivan Taranov, and Nadezhda Bykova for displays of agricultural machinery. In 1954, it was substantially enlarged with a two-story hall crowned by a glazed dome. It later became associated with engineering and cosmonautics as Soviet space achievements gained prominence.

The pavilion combines its original hangar-like hall with the monumental domed section added in 1954. Steel, glass, and concrete created broad spaces for large technological exhibits. Following restoration between 2016 and 2018, it reopened on April 12, 2018, as the Cosmonautics and Aviation Centre. The project restored lost decorative elements while adapting the historic structure for museum use. The permanent exhibition explores Soviet and Russian spaceflight through artifacts and models of spacecraft, satellites, rockets, engines, spacesuits, and scientific equipment. Exhibits include the Vostok-1 descent module in which Yuri Gagarin returned to Earth, alongside material on orbital stations, satellite technology, rocket engineering, cosmonaut training, and life in space. Multimedia displays explain spacecraft design, mission preparation, and orbital research. The building also reflects changing Soviet technological priorities.

Its transformation from an agricultural-mechanization pavilion into a cosmonautics center traces the shift from industrialized agriculture toward engineering and space exploration, allowing visitors to explore spaceflight history within a restored exhibition building shaped by different periods of technological development.
