Afghan War Memorial, Chisinau

Afghan War Memorial, Chisinau

Off Moscow Boulevard down Miron Costin Street stretches the Afghan War Memorial to Sons of Motherland set to commemorate Moldovan casualties in the Soviet-Afghan war of 1979-1989.

Within the complex, one can find a magnificent sculpture of a mourning mother alongside a striking arrangement of white pillars that reach upwards. At a height of five meters, the pillars merge together to form a crown of bronze thorns, while granite plaques bearing the names of fallen soldiers encircle the monument.

This impressive structure towers at a height of 15 meters and was constructed in 2007, with credit given to the architect V. Eremciuc and sculptor B. Dubrovin for their outstanding design. A cascading display of fountains encompasses the memorial, completing the breathtaking setting.

Recently opened, the park is already a popular local hangout, especially with families and teenagers.

Why You Should Visit:
Nicely decorated space, and there are many cafés/restaurants for every budget nearby.

Tip:
The park is especially beautiful when flowers are in bloom.
