Ahi Elvan Mosque, Ankara
Ahi Elvan Mosque was constructed in 1382 near the Ankara Citadel and has stood in the middle of the historic Ulus district in the city center for centuries. The Seljuk-inspired building was restored in 1413 by Sultan Mehmed Chelebi's order, and it acquired the form that we can see today- a simple exterior with adobe brick walls and a Turkish-style tiled roof. Its entrance gates are adorned with stones and various decorations. The mosque features wooden ceilings supported by twelve columns made of wood from Byzantine and Roman constructions.
It is considered the finest example of the woodwork in the area and is decorated with elegant Seljuk-style pentagon motifs. The interior includes two rows of six windows on either side and two rows of four above the altar. The minaret is located in the northwestern corner, and the mosque also boasts a balcony.
