Al Ittihad Square Heritage Park (Union Square Heritage Park), Abu Dhabi

Union Square Heritage Park, located along the bustling Airport Road between Hamdan Street and the Corniche, stands as a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and national identity.

At the heart of this captivating park lies Union Square, an architectural masterpiece that commemorates the formation of the United Arab Emirates. This square stands as a symbol of unity and pride for the Emirati people. The square's design artfully weaves Emirati cultural symbols on a monumental scale, exuding a sense of grandeur and significance.

Union Square Heritage Park is marked by several oversized cream-colored sculptures, each representing an object from Emirati daily life and hospitality. The easiest one to identify, standing in the center, is the dallah, the large Arabic coffee pot with a long curved spout and handle. It symbolizes hospitality, as coffee is traditionally served to guests as a gesture of welcome.

To its right, as you face southeast, is the rose-water sprinkler, used to pour rose water on guests’ hands after a meal as a gesture of respect and appreciation. Next in line is the wide, conical palm-frond shape: the makkabah, a traditional woven food cover. It recalls Emirati meals, family hospitality, and the practical use of palm materials in daily life.

Last in line is the mabkhara, the incense burner. This sculpture has a more flared, open form and represents the burning of fragrant bukhoor, traditionally offered to guests in homes and gatherings. Together, these monuments turn ordinary household objects into national symbols, celebrating union, hospitality, and Emirati heritage on a monumental scale.
