Anaheim First Presbyterian Church, Anaheim

Anaheim First Presbyterian Church, Anaheim

Founded on March 6, 1870, Anaheim First Presbyterian Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Protestant church in Orange County and the fifth Presbyterian church in Southern California. Its roots trace back to a letter written by 24 Anaheim residents, sent on February 8, 1870, to Rev. Alexander Morrison Stewart, urging the creation of a church in their growing community.

The current sanctuary, a landmark in its own right, was designed by architect G. Stanley Wilson. Groundbreaking took place on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, with construction commencing the next day. The church was dedicated on October 7, 1951. Inside, the woodwork was designed by then-pastor Howard Congdon and his wife, adding a personal and artistic touch to the sacred space.

Although the main building dates from the mid-20th century, visitors can still see the original 1904 church structure, unchanged over time, complete with its spires, a golden cross, and a golden inscription on its façade. This building also houses the Anaheim Presbyterian Children’s Center, continuing the church's long tradition of community outreach.

Throughout its 140+ year history, the church has actively engaged with the diverse fabric of Anaheim. As early as 1886, Sunday School classes were held in English, German, Spanish, and Chinese to accommodate the multicultural population. The church is perhaps best known for standing up against the Ku Klux Klan during a dark chapter in Anaheim’s history, reflecting its deep commitment to justice and inclusivity.

Today, Anaheim First Presbyterian is a small but vibrant congregation. In a world of constant change, it offers a spiritual home to all people. As an open and affirming faith community, the church welcomes individuals of every background, identity, ability, and belief. More than just accepting differences, it celebrates them-encouraging each person to express their own experience of the divine and to live out mercy, justice, and love in the heart of the city.

The word “Anaheim” derives from a blend of 'Ana' (after the nearby Santa Ana River) and 'heim,' a common German place name meaning 'home', as the city was founded in 1857 by fifty German families.
