Angster Memorial, Pecs

Angster Memorial, Pecs

The Angster Memorial is a testament to the legacy of the renowned Angster family, whose organ and harmonium factory was a cornerstone of European musical craftsmanship from 1867 to 1951. Jozsef Angster and Son produced over 1307 organs and more than 3000 harmoniums, gracing cathedrals and village churches across the Carpathian Basin with their remarkable instruments. Among these are the organs of Szeged and Kassa cathedrals, which still proudly bear the Angster trademark, alongside prominent institutions like Saint Stephen's Basilica in Budapest and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.

In 2010, Zsofia Berczi, granddaughter of Jozsef Angster, collaborated with Barnabas Tanko and Karolly Tanko to erect the Angster Memorial as part of the 21 Dialogue project. This monument, designed by Zsofia Berczi and Barnabas Tanko, with contributions from David Kohout and Judit Hajdok, stands five meters tall and one and a half meters wide, adorned with 46 stainless organ pipes.

Set upon a substantial white base, the memorial invites visitors to engage with its unique interactive features. Light-sensing buttons embedded in the benches surrounding the statue allow visitors to listen to reports and organ music, offering insight into the Angster family's legacy and the artistry of their instruments.
