Streets Beach, Brisbane

Streets Beach, Brisbane

Streets Beach is a well-known attraction at South Bank, spanning over 2,000 square meters. It's considered a must-visit when you're exploring the 17-hectare South Bank Parklands. This unique man-made beach, the only one of its kind in Australia's inner city, features a beautiful blue lagoon bordered by white sandy shores and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Streets Beach serves as a tranquil oasis right in the heart of Brisbane City.

Streets Beach is made of free-formed concrete and is surrounded by 4,000 cubic meters of sand. The sand used for this beach comes from the Rous Channel in Moreton Bay, and each year, an additional 70 tonnes of sand are added to maintain its pristine condition. Interestingly, nearly half of the lagoon area is situated on reclaimed land that was once part of the Brisbane River.

The design of the beach was created by Desmond Brookes International, and its construction was carried out by Fletcher Jennings Construction and Water and Industrial Engineering. Construction work began in February 1991 and was successfully completed by June 1992. The lagoon itself holds chlorinated freshwater, which is circulated every six hours at a rate of up to 125 liters per second.

The beach has been honored with accolades, such as the title of the cleanest beach in the Moreton Bay region in 1999, as recognized by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council's Clean Beach Challenge. Additionally, it received the Friendliest Beach Award in the 2001 Environmental Protection Agency's Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge.
