Barranco das Belharucas Beach, Albufeira

Barranco das Belharucas Beach, Albufeira

Barranco das Belharucas Beach, located in the municipality of Albufeira between Olhos de Agua and Acoteias, marks the western gateway to the expansive Falesia Beach, which stretches eastward for 7 kilometers toward Vilamoura. This beach stands at the geological transition where the rugged limestone cliffs of the western Algarve give way to striking sand and clay formations. A scenic trail leads down through a deep ravine-a barranco-lined with stone pines and coastal scrub, with birdlife, including the colorful European bee-eaters (belharucas), nesting in the sculpted rock faces. These birds lend their name to the beach, a nod to the rich biodiversity of the area.

Despite its somewhat remote access-either by an unpaved track or through a private entrance at the Sheraton Algarve Hotel & Pine Cliffs Resort-the beach offers good infrastructure. Lifeguards are present from May through October, and amenities include showers, restrooms, shaded umbrellas, and equipment rentals for jet skiing, water skiing, pedal boats, and more adventurous "shark rides." Two restaurants are available, one open to the public and the other part of the resort, offering food and refreshments with sea views.

Barranco das Belharucas Beach proudly holds Blue Flag status and was awarded the Golden Flag in 2000 for its balanced environmental use. With seawater temperatures ranging from 14 °C in winter to 22 °C in summer and over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, it’s a year-round destination for relaxation and exploration. Though less trafficked than its neighboring beaches, it remains a rewarding choice for those seeking natural beauty and calm.
