Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
The Bidvest Wanderers Stadium is a 34,000 capacity first-class cricket venue located just south of Sandton, in the city’s northern suburbs. The home venue for the Highveld Lions, a regional cricket side, it has hosted a number of test matches and one-day cricket internationals. Built in 1956 to replace the Old Wanderers Stadium, it went unused for several years, as South Africa was banned from international sport during the apartheid era. When the national cricket team returned to international competition in 1991, the stadium was completely overhauled. Floodlights were added in 1996 to allow day-night games to be played.
Known for its intimidating atmosphere and challenging pitch, the bowl shaped arena is known to fans as ‘The Bullring’. It has become one of the world’s premier cricket venues, hosting the Cricket World Cup Final in 2003. This made Johannesburg, along with London, one of only two cities to have hosted the soccer, rugby union and cricket world cup finals. The ground also hosted the 2009 Indian Premier League semi finals and the ICC Champions Trophy in the same year. Tickets for regional and international matches are available from the on site box office. The South African cricket season runs from October to April, although tests may be played in June-August, the South African winter season.

The area's original inhabitants included hunter-gatherers from the San tribes and the Ndebele, a tribe associated with the Zulu. A gold rush in 1884 lead to Johannesburg's founding in 1886. Within a decade, the population had grown to 100,000 inhabitants.
