BMO Plaza, Indianapolis
The BMO Plaza, formerly known as M&I Plaza and initially First Indiana Plaza, is a prominent high-rise office building located on North Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis. Completed in 1988, this 401-foot (122-meter) structure stands as the sixth-tallest building in the city and Indiana. With 31 stories and 432,300 square feet (40,160 square meters) of space, it is the ninth-largest office building in downtown Indianapolis.
The building's development began in mid-1986 following the demolition of the Denison Parking garage, which itself was located on the former site of the Denison Hotel, a late 19th-century landmark. Phillip R. Duke and Associates spearheaded the project, and when the building opened in April 1988, it served as the headquarters for First Indiana Federal Savings Bank, its primary tenant at the time.
Over the years, the building underwent several transformations. In 2008, it was renamed M&I Plaza after the acquisition of First Indiana by Marshall & Ilsley Corporation. Three years later, it adopted its current name, BMO Plaza, following the transition to BMO Harris Bank. In 2018, the building was sold for $70 million, reflecting its continued significance in the Indianapolis skyline.
Today, BMO Plaza primarily serves as office space, housing notable tenants such as BMO Harris Bank, the U.S. Department of Defense, and General Electric Capital Services. The ground floor also features several restaurants and a CVS, adding convenience for tenants and visitors alike.
