Bodega Descalzos Viejos (Descalzos Viejos Winery), Ronda
Located in the breathtaking municipality of Ronda, the Old Barefoot Winery (Bodega Descalzos Viejos) is a winery set amidst beautiful natural surroundings. The estate spans 16 hectares, which are home to ten vine varieties spread out over three vineyards. Nestled in the countryside beauty known as the Cornice of the Tajo de Ronda (La Cornisa del Tajo de Ronda), this winery is enveloped by the majestic presence of three natural parks.
Perched at the highest point of the estate stands the winery itself, housed within a magnificent 16th-century Trinitarian convent. In 1998, the Retameto and Salesi families acquired the convent, constructed in 1505, and transformed it into the renowned winery it is today. The winery takes its name, Old Barefoot (Descalzos Viejos), from the oldest Trinitarians who resided in the convent after it suffered damage from earthquakes and dampness.
Behind the main building lies a hidden gem-a beautiful terraced garden adorned with fruit trees and blessed with a natural spring. The vineyard, nestled among ancient olive trees and holm oaks, graces the lower part of the estate, covering six hectares of land. This picturesque landscape and harmonious blend of flora contribute to the unique terroir that influences the wines produced by Old Barefoot Winery.
Old Barefoot Winery stands as a testament to the passion and respect for tradition displayed by the Retameto and Salesi families. Their commitment to preserving the rich history of the Trinitarian convent while producing exceptional wines has created a haven for wine enthusiasts seeking unforgettable experiences in the heart of Ronda's captivating landscapes.
