Iglesia del Socorro (Church of Help), Ronda
The Church of Help carries a deep history, though the current building is a mid-20th-century reconstruction after the original church was destroyed by fire during the Spanish Civil War. The site itself has long served the community, originally hosting a hermitage. Over time, it evolved into a lazaretto and then a hospital for the poor and pilgrims. By the early 1700s, a larger church replaced the hermitage and was elevated to an independent parish in 1833.
The current church, designed by Enrique Atencia in the 1950s, features a balanced square shape with three main sections and a series of domes that give it a distinctive silhouette. Inside, smaller chapels and decorative ceilings reflect the city’s rich artistic heritage.
Outside, the façade is marked by two square towers with bells and tiled spires. The main entrance is framed by stonework and topped with a pediment, while a niche above holds a statue of the Child Jesus, highlighting the church’s lasting spiritual significance. The cream and yellow exterior colors are typical of Andalusian churches, blending tradition with a modern touch.
The church closes daily during siesta.
