Bonington Gallery, Nottingham

Bonington Gallery is a leading contemporary art space located within the Bonington Building at Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art & Design. Since opening in 1969-officially inaugurated by the Duchess of Kent-it has played a central role in the cultural life of Nottingham for over fifty years. Known for its bold and varied programming, the gallery showcases a dynamic mix of visual art, fashion, design, film, music, and cross-disciplinary practices, engaging both the academic community and the general public.

Housed in a striking modernist building designed with collaboration in mind, the gallery boasts a spacious main exhibition area with a 6-metre-high ceiling and a distinctive waffle slab design also found at London’s Barbican Centre. In addition to its main space, the Bonington Gallery features the Bonington Vitrines, archive displays, and satellite shows in the building’s atrium.

The gallery runs an annual calendar of free exhibitions, talks, workshops, film screenings, and performances, offering both in-person and online events. It serves as an educational and creative resource for NTU students, while also connecting with national and international practitioners and institutions.

Bonington Gallery is an integral part of NTU Arts and a founding partner of the Nottingham Art Map, which promotes the city’s vibrant visual arts scene. With a commitment to experimentation and intellectual exchange, it continues to be a vital platform for contemporary artistic practice on both local and global levels.
